Vintage Red Daisy Fencai Gaiwan 景德鎮 老蓋碗

Sale price$110.00 USD

Thin pastel porcelain is one of Jingdezhen's most prestigious art porcelain varieties. It is characterized by porcelain thin as eggshell, translucent, and made of pure glaze. Pastel, like a porcelain glaze painting method, requires very fine workmanship. Jingdezhen's thin pastel porcelain is well-known throughout the world and has won the National Silver Award and the International Fair Gold Award for ceramics.

Fencai meaning "the pink family", classifies the porcelain by the rose-coloured decor against a white background. Fencai was first introduced around the end of the 1720's for use on porcelain. It is said to have developed as a result of European taste and technology introduced by Europeans working within the Imperial Palace. Fencai remained popular throughout the 18th and 19th centuries and is also widely adopted in Europe.

The majority of the enamels are opaque or semi-opaque and do not flow when fired. The creation of Fencai allowed a greater range of colour and tone than was previously possible in the production of Chinese porcelain, enabling the depiction of more complex images, including flowers, figures, and insects. The eggshell workmanship can be enjoyed under light to appreciate like a fine piece of art.
