JianZhan Cup (Indigo) 建盞大杯 - 藍

JianZhan ware (建盏) is the royal warranted teaware of the Song Dynasty. This ceramic is famous for its black-glazed coating that transforms into unique metallic crackling when fired. A true JianZhan cup must be sourced from Napping, Fujian using only the clay and wood-ash found locally and to be fired in the prefecture’s kiln. Only then would these ceramics upholds the highest quality.

The different chroma of JianZhan ware is the result of firing the pottery within a small temperature range near 1,300 °C. The iron-rich glaze will oxidize given these conditions, forming its characteristic patterns. The industry has a saying – “In the kiln as one color, out with a million” (“入窑一色，出窑万彩”); Collectors often praise JianZhan ware for its organic beauty. No two products are ever identical even from the same batch. As such, each JianZhan ware is always a serendipitous encounter.

Usage and Maintenance

Use JianZhan ware to elevate your tea experience. The mineral-sealed coating is an excellent insulator that can also neutralize the acidity in tap water. Consider designating one JianZhan ware to similar tea color only (e.g., Black tea with Cooked Pu-erh). This helps maintain the cup’s vibrancy over time.
