Jingdezhen Artist's Wu Ling Design

The design for 和靖愛梅圖 would center around the poet Lin Bu (林逋), also known by his sobriquet "He Jing," and his deep affection for plum blossoms. The plum blossom, representing purity, resilience, and solitude, is at the heart of this concept, symbolizing Lin Bu's poetic spirit and his life of peaceful reclusion. The artwork would blend natural beauty with a contemplative mood, capturing the essence of solitude and harmonious living.

Lin Bu, The scholar would be depicted in a tranquil, contemplative pose, standing or sitting beneath a plum tree in full bloom. His posture should convey a deep sense of serenity, as he gazes at or lightly touches the delicate blossoms. Dressed in traditional robes, he would represent the ideal of a scholar-recluse, embodying a life of simplicity and introspection.

Plum Blossoms, the plum tree, blooming in winter, would be the central natural element. The branches, adorned with delicate white or pink blossoms, would spread gracefully, some dusted with snow. This symbolizes purity, strength, and Lin Bu’s emotional connection with the natural world. The contrast between the bare branches and vibrant flowers speaks to the beauty of endurance amidst hardship.

The design of 和靖愛梅圖 would celebrate Lin Bu’s deep appreciation for the plum blossom as a symbol of purity, strength, and enduring beauty. The composition would highlight his peaceful reclusion, with the plum blossoms serving as a metaphor for his character—simple yet profound, fragile yet resilient. The design would offer a visual meditation on the themes of solitude, harmony with nature, and the quiet beauty of life. Read more

Craftsmanship

景德鎮 釉下五彩瓷 Jingdezhen Wucai (Five colors) is one variety of painted porcelain developed in the Qing dynasty. Artists incorporate a palette of five or more water-based pigments to depict vibrant characters or scenery. With the aim to achieve the most refined and delicate brushwork.

Jingdezhen artists to this day continue to abide by the tradition of painting free-handedly. Each piece of Wucai porcelain is made to age well with time and for sure would carry tealovers far into their tea venture.

The paintwork is then laminated underneath a white enamel called the underglaze. When fired at a temperature nearing 1380°C, it rids any residual impurities, making it non-toxic and safe for drinking. The finished product is a characteristic smooth and glass-like shin. This coating helps set the painting underneath and prevents pigmentation from fading.

The high particle density of this glaze also carries two additional benefits. One is to prevent liquids from eroding into inner layers, such that its glossy exterior stays in pristine condition for decades. Second of all, the underglaze reinforces the porcelain’s form, making deformation unlikely even when poured with scorching hot liquids repeatedly.
