Hand-crafted in Jingdezhen by renowned ceramic artist Wu Ling (吳玲), the Longevity Charm Gaiwan embodies the finest traditions of Wucai (五彩) under-glaze porcelain, a heritage technique dating back to the Qing Dynasty.

“Wucai,” meaning Five Colors, is one of Jingdezhen’s most celebrated painting styles. Using a palette of delicate, water-based mineral pigments, the artist paints each scene entirely free-hand, no decals, no transfers, no repetition. Every gaiwan is therefore a unique work of art, rich with movement, spirit, and classical elegance.

The symbolic theme 富貴長壽 (Prosperity & Longevity) is expressed through flowing brushwork and harmonious composition, reflecting traditional Chinese wishes for abundance, longevity, and enduring good fortune. A perfect companion for daily tea practice or a meaningful gift.

True Jingdezhen under-glaze craftsmanship

After the painting is completed, it is sealed beneath a layer of pure white porcelain glaze known as under-glaze. The gaiwan is then fired at an exceptionally high temperature close to 1380°C permanently bonding the artwork into the porcelain body.

This firing process achieves three important qualities:

• Food-safe and non-toxic – all impurities are burned away, making it ideal for daily tea use
• Color permanence – the painting is locked beneath the glaze and will never fade or peel
• Glass-smooth finish – a luminous, silky surface that enhances both beauty and hygiene

The high-density glaze also prevents tea or moisture from penetrating the porcelain, keeping the gaiwan stain-free and preserving its brilliance for decades. At the same time, it strengthens the vessel’s structure, allowing it to withstand repeated exposure to boiling water without warping or cracking.
