Wucai Underglaze Coloured Porcelain 景德鎮釉下五彩瓷
The paintwork is then laminated underneath a white enamel called the underglaze. When fired at a temperature nearing 1380°C, it rids any residual impurities, making it non-toxic and safe for drinking. The finished product is a characteristic smooth and glass-like shin. This coating helps set the painting underneath and prevents pigmentation from fading.
The high particle density of this glaze also carries two additional benefits. One is to prevent liquids from eroding into inner layers, such that its glossy exterior stays in pristine condition for decades. Second of all, the underglaze reinforces the porcelain’s form, making deformation unlikely even when poured with scorching hot liquids repeatedly.
景德鎮 釉下五彩瓷 Jingdezhen Wucai (Five colors) is one variety of painted porcelain developed in the Qing dynasty. Artists typically incorporate a palette of five or more water-based pigments to depict vibrant scenery of nature.
With the aim to achieve the most refined and delicate brushwork, Jingdezhen artists to this day continue to abide by the tradition of painting free-handedly. Each piece of Wucai porcelain is made to age well with time and for sure would carry tealovers far into their tea venture.
