Jingdezhen Artist's Wu Ling Design

吉祥安康-紅竹水仙 translates to "Auspicious Peace and Health – Red Bamboo and Narcissus." This phrase combines symbols of prosperity, good fortune, health, and elegance, using  紅竹(hóng zhú, "red bamboo") and 水仙 (shuǐ xiān, "narcissus") to convey these ideas.

Red Bamboo and Narcissus

The design center around two key elements:  red bamboo and narcissus flowers. Both are potent symbols in Chinese culture, often representing strength, resilience, purity, and renewal, and together they create a harmonious blend of virtues for auspiciousness, health, and peace.

Red Bamboo (紅竹)

Bamboo is a traditional symbol of strength, flexibility, and endurance due to its ability to bend without breaking. The red color adds layers of significance—red symbolizes good fortune, happiness, and celebration in Chinese culture.

Narcissus (水仙)

Narcissus flowers, with their delicate white petals and golden centers, symbolize purity, renewal, and new beginnings. They are often associated with self-reflection and good fortune, blooming in early spring, bringing a fresh, clean energy into the design.

Color Palette

The colors would be harmonious yet striking, with deep red for the bamboo and soft white and green for the narcissus. The contrast between these elements would emphasize both the strength and beauty inherent in the composition. Read more

Craftsmanship

景德鎮 釉下五彩瓷 Jingdezhen Wucai (Five colors) is one variety of painted porcelain developed in the Qing dynasty. Artists incorporate a palette of five or more water-based pigments to depict vibrant characters or scenery. With the aim to achieve the most refined and delicate brushwork.

Jingdezhen artists to this day continue to abide by the tradition of painting free-handedly. Each piece of Wucai porcelain is made to age well with time and for sure would carry tealovers far into their tea venture.

The paintwork is then laminated underneath a white enamel called the underglaze. When fired at a temperature nearing 1380°C, it rids any residual impurities, making it non-toxic and safe for drinking. The finished product is a characteristic smooth and glass-like shin. This coating helps set the painting underneath and prevents pigmentation from fading.

The high particle density of this glaze also carries two additional benefits. One is to prevent liquids from eroding into inner layers, such that its glossy exterior stays in pristine condition for decades. Second of all, the underglaze reinforces the porcelain’s form, making deformation unlikely even when poured with scorching hot liquids repeatedly.
