Aroma: rich dark caramel-toned liquor, aged wood, herbs, earthiness, hints of ginseng, straw and warm mineral notes.
Tasting Notes: The first infusion opens with a smooth and composed profile, showing gentle aged wood, herbal and earthy notes. The first 3–4 infusions are exceptionally smooth and soothing, with a thick, rounded mouthfeel and minimal sharpness. As the tea opens further, the core flavour emerges with a distinctive old-tree (gu shu) character, bringing depth, mineral complexity and a steady, uplifting energy (chi). A medium astringency gradually builds, adding structure and persistence to the tea.
The liquor is rich and full with a heavy, silky texture. As the session progresses, deeper layers unfold, woodsy and toasted wood notes appear alongside cedar, pine and soft mossy undertones. Later infusions reveal a gentle sweetness with subtle perfumed notes that lift the finish. The tea shows excellent durability, maintaining clarity, strength and balance through many infusions.
This 1998 recipe #8972 Sheng Pu-erh brick was produced in the traditional compressed brick style, originally packaged as a bundle of four bricks (1 kg total). The classic #8972 recipe represents a balanced blend designed for aging, combining strength and structure with the ability to develop complexity over time. After more than two decades of natural aging, the tea has matured beautifully while retaining its lively character and enduring backbone.
The #8972 recipe, first developed in 1989, is known for its larger leaf grade and strong aging structure. Even after decades, this tea retains a gentle astringency, an indication of its continued aging potential and vitality.
